Party Favor Bags - Usable? Or a Giant Waste of Money?

My little guy just turned 5 and as I was party shopping for the 5th time, I realized something. You know those party favor bags that you provide to the kiddos who attend? They are usually made of plastic, correspond with the cake character and are filled with junk?

Well, when we are the recipients of these, I typically try to hide or throw the party favor bag and the contents away as soon as little bits will have forgotten about it, HA! So why then, why, do parents spend SEVERAL dollars on these bags? They make no impression, there is no use gotten out of them. Am I the only mom who does this; am I mean? I set out to investigate just that. I asked fellow moms, fellow experts on the topic and much to my relief, I am not as evil as I feared!

Turns out, most moms are on the same page. The least amount of junk attained, the better. The least amount of candy ingested, the better. And let's face it, candy is cheap so....usually that is the major component of the average party favor bag!

So for this party I set out to change this practice. I did a lot of searching but the results were amazing. Did you know that you can find small tote bags or pencil boxes that can be PERSONALIZED with the attendees names? Now, I know what you're thinking; those must be crazy expensive. They are in fact NOT. I spent a little less than $10 and the monogrammed tote bags served as a holder for the "projects" we did at the party. Throw some fruit snacks in there if you choose but I did not even do that. Each bag was stuffed only with a picture of the birthday boy that included a pre-written thank you note from him for coming to his party and making his birthday special. Voila! I just killed two birds with one stone; the thank you notes were complete before the party even ended and to my surprise it wasn't only the parents who were super excited by the monogrammed tote bags! The kids squealed with delight at their names on the bags.

I should also add that we've been to one party since ours and the idea was apparently a hit! This particular expert, I mean mom, threw the whole bag concept out altogether and did a personalized hair bow for her daughter's princess themed party. Fellow moms, I think we have a winner here!!
